Broiler chicken prices increased again in the capital’s wholesale and retail markets on Thursday. The prices of broiler went up by Tk15-20 per kg compared to the previous day.
Apart from chicken, the price of eggs also shot up by Tk50 per one hundred in the wholesale market, but it remained stable in the retail market until Thursday.
However, retailers say that the price of beef may increase next week as Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, is nearing.
Besides, rice, gram, edible oil, sugar, onion and garlic and other commodities were being sold at previous high.
Before the start of Ramadan, the price of broiler chicken suddenly increased and was sold at Tk270-280 per kg. Earlier, it was Tk230-240 per kg.
As the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) sent letter to big farmers seeking explanation about the sudden price hike, they announced decision to reduce the price of broiler at production level by Tk25-30 per kg. Since then, the price has also been declining in the retail market. By Wednesday, the price fell to Tk215-220 per kg.
But within a week, the price of chicken started to rise again. Retailers say that if the prices increase in the wholesale market, they also have to sell chicken at higher prices.
Broiler chicken was being sold at Tk235-240 per kg at Segunbagicha kitchen market on Thursday. It was Tk215-220 per kg on the previous day in this market. Sonali breed chicken was being sold at Tk370 per kg, which was up to Tk350 on the previous day.
Prices of chickens went up by Tk10 to Tk210 in the wholesale markets, including Mohammadpur Krishi Market.
Farm chicken eggs were selling at Tk130-135 per dozen in this market. The price of eggs in the retail market was the same as before.
Seller Noor-e-Alam said, “I bought eggs from the wholesale market yesterday (Wednesday). So, I could sell it at the previous price. But the price of 100 eggs has increased by Tk50 today (Thursday) compared to the previous day. This increase in price may have an impact on the retail market from tomorrow (Friday).”
Sellers fear that the price of beef may increase further from the next week like egg and chicken. They say the price of a cow weighing 100 kg now is Tk75,000-80,000. Accordingly, the price of meat is Tk750-800 per kg. “If the profit of retailers is added, the current price should be increased. Before Eid, the price of beef will go up in the market in that case and meat sellers will have no alternative but to increase the meat price,” one of the sellers said.
Abdus Salam, a meat seller at Mugda Bazar said, “We are still selling meat at Tk750, but it was being sold at Tk800 in many markets. I don’t know how many days I can sell meat at this price. But the price of meat may increase before Eid.”
Though the prices of some vegetables came down, the prices of all vegetables were still very high.
On Thursday, cucumber and brinjal were sold at Tk50-60 per kg, which were sold at up to Tk 100 last week. Most vegetables, including lady’s finger, bitter gourd and pointed gourd, were sold at Tk60-100 per kg. Potato was sold at Tk20-25 per kg. Besides, some vegetables, including tomato, were sold atTk 40-60 per kg. The price of lemon decreased slightly. Medium-sized lemons were sold at Tk25-35 per four pieces.
Onion was being sold at Tk40-45 per kg while garlic and ginger at Tk120-160 per kg. Other essential items, including sugar, gram and edible oil, were being sold at previous prices. Even though duty has been reduced, sugar was being sold at Tk115-120 per kg.
