Rampal coal-fired power plant in Bagerhat has halted electricity generation due to technical failure on Saturday this week.
Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL) Deputy General Manager Anwarul Azim confirmed the matter on Monday.
Anwarul Azim said the plant will restore powr generation very soon.
He assured the power plant has ample coal reserves. As a matter of fact, one coal consignment is inbound from the sea.
Meanwhile, the sudden shutdown of the Rampal thermal power plant has affected the power supply.
Blackouts were regnant across the region including in Bagerhat. Earlier, the thermal power plant was closed from January 14 for a month owing to shortages.
In 2013, the Bangladesh Power Development Board signed an agreement with its Indian counterpart to establish the much-talked-about coal-induced power plant with an aim to produce cost-effective electricity. The estimated cost for the setup of the Rampal Power Plant project is $2 billion. Some 83 per cent of the project has so far been completed.
