Meta stops ‘taking ad’ from Bangladeshi clients

Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp’s official advertisement services will be “unavailable or lim-ited” for clients in Bangladesh until further notice due to the ongoing dollar crisis, said the social media giant’s revenue col-lection agent Httpool Bangladesh Limited.

“This decision came out due to the dollar availability and the difficulties with remittance,” said Meta’s authorised sales partner in Bangladesh Httpool in a letter signed by its Director Sunny Nagpal on Tuesday.

“We are writing to you in regards to our advertising agreement, and we regret to inform you that our services related to the Meta platform will be temporarily unavailable or reduced until further notice. This is due to the lack of USD currency available and difficulties with remittances abroad,” said Sunny Nagpal.

“As a result of the situation, there will be limited availability of ad space on the platform offered by Httpool, which may result in the reduction of available ad space for your upcoming campaigns and the possibility of rejection or blockage of the current and upcoming campaigns,” Nagpal added.

Assuring Httpool to resolve this issue as soon as possible, the letter said, brands and big shops. Most of the shops were empty while many were closed.

Traders said many weddings and other ceremonies were delayed due to Ramadan and Eid. These will get underway soon and many have started to come and pre-order gold jewellery.

Moreover, this month only has four days left. So, business is expected to return to normal very soon once people are back from their holidays, they said.

Talking to The Business Post, Ranjit Ghosh, owner and managing director of Sananda Jewelers, said, “We opened the showroom today [Wednesday] after the Eid holidays. There aren’t many customers because many haven’t returned to Dhaka yet and are enjoying the holidays. But we still made some sales.”

“We expect the situation to return to normal next week,” he added.

He said, “Those who buy gold [jewellery] decide their plan and budget in advance before placing orders. The gold market will hopefully become normal from next Sunday as the weddings that couldn’t happen during Ramadan will start taking place very soon.”

Hafez Khan, the manager of a Bata showroom at Elephant Road, also said that their branch and many other shops in the area reopened on Wednesday after the Eid holidays.

“Although some shops are still closed, everyone on this street is likely to reopen their businesses from the beginning of the next week. We hope the sales will also increase at the same time,” he added.
