Over two years after starting Covid-19 vaccination in the country, Bangladesh is set to administer bivalent Covid-19 vaccine as booster dose soon, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque.
The country has already received 1.1 million doses of bivalent Covid vaccine from the World Health Organisation (WHO), he added.
“The vaccines will be administered as booster doses,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a programme held at his ministry on Tuesday.
The health minister said that they will receive another 2 million doses of bivalent Covid-19 vaccine immediately.
He also said that patients are now receiving service from specialist doctors in 51 government hospitals across the country. “We have noticed that people are pleased with such service. So, it will be launched in 100 more hospitals across the country within next week,” he added.
Director General of DGHS Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam presided over the programme while secretary of Health Service Division Md Anwar Hossain Howlader, secretary of Health Education and Family Welfare Division Md Azizur rahman, DG of Family Planning Directorate Sahan Ara Banu and DG of Health Education Prof Dr Tito Miah were, among others, present at the meeting.
Bangladesh has so far administered 150.74 million first doses, 139.78 million second doses, 67.47 million first booster doses and 3.16 million second booster doses till April 30.
As the country is running out of stock, DGHS suspended the vaccination drive since March 1. The administration of Pfizer and Sinopharm vaccines are continuing in the capital’s two health institutes on a limited scale.
