Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi during a press briefing in Rangpur on Friday said the government will import onion if the current price does not decrease within two or three days.
He also said though the government has fixed the sugar price it has not had any impact on the local markets. The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has been working to ensure the government’s sugar prices.
In regards to the control over the kitchen market, he said, “I do not bear the sole responsibility for the kitchen market as the commerce ministry does not control all things here. There are other ministries also. The entire market situation however is not worse as the prices of vegetables in the kitchen market often fluctuate.”
The minister also said people are suffering due to the soaring prices of onion and sugar. The situation will be brought under control soon. A section of dishonest traders has been taking advantage of the upward trend of the international sugar market. The machinery of government is active to control the market.
He further added the price of imported products has increased slightly along with dollar prices.
“We still, however, are in better condition in comparison to the global market situation. We have to work together to face the ongoing global recession,” said the minister.
AL central committee executive member and former Member of Parliament Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia, Pirgacha Upazila Parishad Chairman Abu Naser Shah Mohammad Mahabubar Rhaman, Rangpur Metropolitan Deputy Police Commissioner Abu Maruf Hossain and district AL unit leaders and activists were also present during the briefing.
