State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that he has told the World Bank’s South Asian vice president Martin Raiser that the import of more electricity from the Indian power market is under active consideration.
The state minister stated this in a meeting with an eight-member delegation led by World Bank’s South Asian vice president at Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Nasrul Hamid said, “The 500 MW hydropower import from Nepal is almost final and we want to import more hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan.”
The Ministry stated that the respective teams discussed cross-border trade, regional power markets in South Asia, and power imports from Nepal and Bhutan and the Bangladesh team highlighted the existing and upcoming power projects of the energy sector.
Nasrul Hamid said to Martin Raiser that 2,000 MW of electricity will be generated from renewable sources in the next two years. Another 6,000 MW of power to be generated from renewable sources is in the pipeline over the next five to six years. The 10 closed-off coal-powered energy plants have cost nearly $10 billion in investment, but not enough investment is being made towards renewable solutions. He wants the cooperation of the World Bank in this regard.
Khairuzzaman Mozumder secretary of Energy Division, Nurul Alam, additional secretary of Power Division, World Bank Country Director Abdoulaye Seck, Operations Manager Dandan Chen and Operations Advisor Gayle Martin were also present during the meeting.
