Eid-ul-Azha, the second biggest religious festival of Muslims, will be celebrated in the country on June 29.

The National Moon Sighting Committee announced the decision at a meeting held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital after the moon of the holy month Zilhaj was sighted in the sky of Bangladesh territory Monday evening, sources said.

The Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated on the 10th day of Zilhaj.

Meanwhile, the government has extended the Eid-ul-Azha holidays by a day including June 27.

The extra holiday was approved at the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the day.

The government had extended the holiday by one day last Eid-ul-Fitr as well.

Before the executive order, the Eid holidays was from June 28 to 30 depending on the sighting of the moon. Now, the Eid holidays will start from June 27.

Also, July 1 is a government holiday, meaning, government employees will get five consecutive days off.

A meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee is scheduled to be held Monday evening to set the date of the moon sighting of holy month of Zilhaj 1444 Hijri and the date of the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
