The apparel sector achieved significant progress in terms of innovation, technology and workers’ safety in the last decade, and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will showcase this stellar performance to the world during the Made in Bangladesh Week.
Making the remark at a press conference on Saturday marking the event’s inauguration, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said, “We are organising this mega event to showcase the transformation story and strengths of Bangladesh’s RMG industry to the world.
“Getting the stakeholders on the path to future growth is also the main objective.”
At the press briefing, he announced the schedule of the week-long event, organised for the first time by the BGMEA in partnership with the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange to showcase the achievements of the country’s apparel industry to the buyers, brands, partners, supply chain, development partners, and local and global media. BGMEA will organise the event every year.
The weeklong event will hold various programmes including International Apparel Federation (IAF) golf tournament, seminars, 37th International Apparel Federation (IAF) World Fashion Convention and Assembly, 3rd Dhaka Apparel Summit, Bangladesh Apparel Exposition, Denim Expo, fashion show, Sustainable Fashion Award, Fashion Photography Award, launching of BGMEA Centre of Innovation, Efficiency and OSH and green factory tour by the foreign journalists and IAF members.
Faruque Hassan said, “Made in Bangladesh Week is not organised to brand BGMEA, but the whole apparel industry of Bangladesh. We will consider it successful if we can do that.”
In reply to a query, he said, “The world is now facing an economic crisis and we cannot avoid it. We are facing energy and other crises, but we believe that we will be able to overcome this crisis also like the pandemic. We have already talked with the higher authorities and we believe that the ongoing energy crisis will be resolved soon.”
Replying to another quarry, Faruque said, “Although importers are failing to open new Letters of Credit (LCs) due to the ongoing foreign currency shortage, export-oriented factories of the RMG sector are yet to face it.
At the press conference, Executive Chairman of EPIC Group Ranjan Mahtani said, “The country is growing now. Bangladesh has to think about what will happen after 10 or 20 years. The country has to formulate strategies on a long-term basis.”
IAF President Cem Alton said that they are happy to organise the IAF World Fashion Convention and Assembly in Bangladesh, one of the biggest exporters of apparel items in the world. “It will be an example for the global apparel industry,” he said.
International Apparel Federation, established in 1976, is an international trade association with 150,000 members. Its membership includes national clothing associations and companies whose core business is sourcing, designing, developing, manufacturing, distributing, and retailing apparel products.
