Bangladesh has advanced one notch on the latest Democracy Index 2021 of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
With an overall score 5.99 on scale of 10, Bangladesh has ranked 75th jointly with Tunisia, the London-based analysis group said in a report on Thursday.
In 2020, the country stood at 76th place with the same score.
Bangladesh is still classified as a ‘hybrid regime’, which means that substantial irregularities often prevent the elections from being free and fair, according to the report.
The country scored 7.42 in electoral process and pluralism category, 6.07 in functioning of government, 5.56 in political participation, 5.63 in political culture, and 5.29 in civil liberties, it said.
In the South Asian region, Bangladesh ranked third, as India and Sri Lanka were in 46th and 67th spot respectively.
Norway, New Zealand, and Finland held top three spots respectively, while the last three spots were occupied by North Korea, Myanmar, and Afghanistan.
