The government is set to start a walk-in inoculation programme for the Rohingyas at the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar from Tuesday, said officials at the Office of the Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commissioner.
About 48,000 Rohingya people — aged above 55 — are scheduled to receive Sinopharm jabs during the there-day-drive, Mohammad Shamsud Douza, Additional RRRC, told The Business Post.
About 58 vaccination teams would supervise the 56 vaccination centres at the 34 camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, the additional commissioner added.
Cox’s Bazar Civil Surgeon Mahbubur Rahman told The Business Post that they would monitor the vaccination activities.
“If we fail to vaccinate the 48,000 Rohingya people in the three-day drive, we might require few more days to cover the large population,” said the civil surgeon.
At least 11,00,000 Rohingya people reside in 34 camps and among them 2,654 Rogingyas had tested positive for Covid-19. Cox’s Bazar civil surgeon’s office said 29 people died from the disease. Of them 27 were from the camps in Ukhiya and two from Teknaf.
More than 1.1 million Rohingyas are living in the camps in Cox’s Bazar after the mass exodus caused by the brutal military crackdown in Rakhine state of Myanmar.
Earlier on the day, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Professor Khurshid Alam told The Business Post that inoculating the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) people would be done from August 10 to 12.
