The High Court on Monday directed the authorities concerned to remove online social media platform TikTok and games Free Fire and PUBG.

A virtual bench comprising HC Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order.

Besides, the court issued a ruling asking why a technical committee should not be constituted to regularly monitor online games and a guideline should not be issued in this regard, Humayun Kabir Pallab, the petitioner's lawyer, told The Business Post.

On June 24, Supreme Court lawyers Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab and Barrister Mohammad Kawsar, filed a writ petition on public interest on behalf of the ‘Law and Life Foundation’, a human rights organization, in the relevant branch of the HC.

The writ asked for HC’s instruction to remove online games and apps from online platforms in the country.

Barrister Kabir said the country's youth are engaging in various immoral activities using TikTok and likee apps.

"Also, young people are getting addicted to games like PUBG. Besides, teenagers are being trained in violence through these games and spending money playing these games. This is why these games are being considered as harmful," he added.

In the writ petition, postal and telecommunications secretary, BTRC chairman, education secretary, home secretary, law ministry secretary, health secretary, inspector general of police, Bangladesh Bank, mobile operator bKash and Nagad were named as defendants.
