Water level of the Brahmaputra remained steady while the Jamuna continues rising with a possibility of improvement of the flood situation within a couple of days in the Brahmaputra basin.
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board said major rivers were flowing above the danger levels at eight points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura and Sirajganj districts on Sunday.
Water levels of the Dudhkumar and Dharla marked falls by 14cm and 8cm at Pateshwari and Kurigram points during the last 24 hours and were still flowing above the DL by 1cm and 24cm at these points respectively at 9 am.
Besides, water levels of the Brahmaputra marked a fall by 2cm at Chilmari point and was flowing above the DL by 18m thjere at 9 am today.
However, water levels of the Jamuna marked moderate rises by 5cm at Fulchhari, 10cm at Bahadurabad, 8cm at Sariakandi and 9cm at Kazipur and 8cm at Sirajganj points during the last 24 hours.
At 9:00am today, the Jamuna was flowing above the DL by 5cm at Fulchhari, 12cm at Bahadurabad, 30cm at Sariakandi, 26 at Kazipur and 34cm at Sirajganj points in the Brahmaputra basin.
Water level of the Teesta marked a rise by 20cm at Dalia point in Nilphamari during the period to flow at the DL while the same fell by 1cm at Kawnia point to flow below the DL by 9cm at 9 am today.
Talking to BSS, Executive Engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB at Dhaka, M Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said the Brahmaputra is in steady state while the Jamuna is in rising trend which may continue in the next 24 hours.
“The flood situation at low lying areas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura and Sirajganj districts may continue to deteriorate while the Teesta may remain steady in the Brahmaputra basin in the next 24 hours,” he added.
Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said floodwater has submerged standing crops on 14,921 hectares of land in low-lying areas of four districts out of five in Rangpur agriculture region alone.
The submerged standing crops include transplanted Aman rice on 14,496 hectares of land, Aman seedbeds on 80 hectares and vegetables on 245 hectares of land in Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts.
“No notable damage would be caused to the submerged crops if flood water receded within the next three days,” said Additional Director of the DAE’s Rangpur region Agriculturist Bidhu Bhusan Ray.
Chief Engineer for Rangpur zone of BWDB Jyoti Prosad Ghosh told BSS this evening that flood control embankments are remaining safe as BWDB officials and employees are monitoring those round the clock.
Water levels of the Brahmaputra, Teesta and Dharla might continue to recede in Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Kurigram while the Jamuna may rise in the next 24 hours.
“The flood situation may start improving soon as the rate of onrushing water from the upstream has started falling in the Brahmaputra basin,” Ghosh added.
Talking to BSS, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Rangpur ATM Akhteruzzaman said the district administration has allocated Taka 3.50 lakh and 20 tonnes of rice for distribution among flood-hit people of Gangachara upazila.
Gaibandha DRRO Idris Ali said the district administration has allocated 40 tonnes of rice and taka two lakh for distribution among flood-hit people of four upazilas in the district where water levels of major rivers started receding today.
