ICRC chief lauds Bangladesh for sheltering Rohingyas

Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), called on Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on September 23.

During the meeting, Maurer expressed gratitude from ICRC to Bangladesh, particularly to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her humanitarian gesture in providing shelter to Rohingyas when they entered Bangladesh after being persecuted in their homeland by their own state machinery.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister suggested ICRC should work more actively in Rakhine State with the Myanmar authorities for the creation of a conducive environment so that the Rohingyas can go back to their homeland with dignity and in a sustainable manner.

Bangladesh hosts over 1.1 million Rohingyas as no repatriation took place over the last four years. The last exodus began on 25 August 2017, when violence broke out in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, forcing thousands of Rohingyas to seek shelter in Bangladesh.
