Police on Tuesday arrested controversial Islamic cleric Mufti Kazi Ibrahim on charges of disseminating “misleading and bizarre” information online.

“He has been arrested for disseminating bizarre and misleading information online and create confusion among people. Filing of a case is now under process against him,” Faruk Hossain, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s media wing, told The Business Post.

Quoting Ibrahim’s personal secretary, his follower Kamal Hossain Shahedi earlier on a Facebook live show said the cleric was picked up by plainclothes people from his Mohammadpur home.

He was later taken to the office of the Detective Branch of police at Minto Road.

In one of his speeches, Ibrahim quoted late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in claiming William Shakespeare as Muslim with his original name as Sheikh Jubair.

Earlier on March 4, 2020, in a video posted on a YouTube channel, Ibrahim claimed to have a remedy for the coronavirus infection.

According to Ibrahim, an Italy-resident Mannan Maruf “interviewed” the coronavirus in his dream.

The virus told Mamun that Allah sent the coronavirus soldiers to attack the Chinese authorities for mistreating the Uighur Muslims.

Ibrahim in a separate video claimed coronavirus had told Mamun that it would kill one-seventh of the world’s population before its disappearance.
