JMB man to die for bomb attack on Ctg court

A court in Chattogram on Sunday sentenced an operative of banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh to death in a case filed for a suicide bomb attack on the court premises in 2005.

Chattogram Anti-Terrorism Tribunal Judge Abdul Halim delivered the verdict in absence of the condemned convict, Jahidul Islam Mizan alias ‘Boma Mizan’, a bomb maker for the militant outfit.

The court also handed down life imprisonment to another JMB operative, Jabed Iqbal, in the case.

Iqbal, JMB’s Chattogram divisional commander, was in the dock during the verdict announcement, while Mizan is now serving prison sentence for 29 years in India, the tribunal’s Public Prosecutor Monoranjan Das said.

On February, 13, 2014, a group of militants snatched Mizan from a prison van in Trishal of Mymensingh.

In August 2018, Mizan was arrested in India and a court sentenced him to 29-year jail on February 10 this year in Burdwan blast case.

UNB adds: According to the prosecution, Rajib Barua, a police constable, and Shahabuddin, a justice seeker, were killed as some militants hurled a bomb on a police check post at the court premises on November 29, 2005.

Ten people including cops and pedestrians were also injured in the attack. A case was filed with Kotwali Police Station on that day.

On May 18, 2006, then DB inspector Hla Ching Pru submitted a charge sheet against five people, including JMB chief Abdur Rahman, its second-in-command Siddiqur Rahman alias Bangla bhai, its military commander Ataur Rahman Sunny, ‘Boma Mizan’ and Jabed in the case.

On July 16, 2006, a court framed charges against them.

JMB leaders Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai and Sunny were hanged in another case and that’s why they were excluded from the case.

Later, the case was shifted to Chattogram Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in 2018.
