Set on fire by step-father, third grader dies

A class-III student, who was set on fire allegedly by his step-father in Satkhira last week, succumbed to his injuries at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute Wednesday.

The deceased, Nazmul, was a student of Ichapur Primary School in Kajla of Kaliganj in Satkhira. Locals said Najmul lived with his grandmother Fatema Khatun in Kajla.

On Friday night, his step-father Sobuj, along with his family members, set Nazmul’s grandmother’s house on fire when the two were fast asleep. Later, the victims were rushed to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, where Nazmul succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday.

Fatema Khatun is undergoing treatment at the hospital, but her condition is said to be critical, police said.

Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said they have detained the accused, Sobuj. “An FIR is being lodged in the case,” he said.
