Five ‘Ansar al-Islam’ members held in city

Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) unit of Bangladesh Police in an overnight raid Saturday arrested five operatives of Anser Al Islam, a banned militant outfit in Bangladesh, from different areas in the city.

The arrested were identified as Md Mithun Rahman, 29, Sakib Al Hasan, 19 , Mohammad Abdus Shukkur, 21, Mohammad Jaber, 25, and Mohammad Omar Faruk,1 9, said a press release this afternoon.

It said a team of the ATU arrested Mithun from a house in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area on Friday night with an aneroid cell phone and five books on militancy. Later, police arrested his other cohorts from Hazratpur area under Keranignaj police station. They came here from Habiganj and Laxmipur districts to do their party activities as part of the conspiracy to establish a Khelafat in Bangladesh, the release also said.

Afterwards, an anti-terrorism case was filed in this connection with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.
