Indemnity Ordinance viewed as the worst law in history: Nasim

Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim on Friday said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and Khandakher Mostaq enacted the law of indemnity ordinance to protect the killers after the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, terming it as the worst law in history.

He said this while addressing a senior agriculturists’ conference at Krishibid Institution at Khamarbari in the capital. Nasim said on this day, November 12, 1996, the most heinous indemnity law was repealed in Parliament.

“After the assassination of Bangabandhu, the killers wanted to legitimize the assassination.  So, they passed the Indemnity Ordinance, then in 1979 Ziaur Rahman incorporated it into the constitution,” he said.

Nasim also said the conspirators wanted to release the killers of Bangabandhu through this law and so that there would be no trial later.

He said “This is a very important and dignified day for us.  The BNP was in the opposition that day, they did not want the law to be enforced.
