Judge Kamrunnahar removed from judicial duty

The Supreme Court has asked the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Judge, Mosammat Kamrunnahar, not to sit in the court from Sunday morning.

The apex court came up with the instruction three days after the judge on Thursday made a controversial observation while delivering verdict in Banani rape case.

In her judgement, Kamrunnahar asked the police not to record rape cases 72 hours after the incidents, which drew heavy criticism from rights activists and commoners.

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain in consultation with other senior justices took the decision, said Supreme Court spokesperson Mohammad Saifur Rahman in a press release.

The apex court also sent a letter to the law ministry seeking attachment of the judge to the Law and Justice Division after revoking her judicial power temporarily, it added.

In the Banani rape case, all the five accused, including Safat Ahmed, son of Apan Jewellers owner Dildar Ahmed, were acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against them.
