Robbers kill fisherman, injure 11 in Bay

A fisherman was killed and 11 others were injured during an exchange of fire with a gang of robbers in the Bay of Bengal near Patharghata of Barguna on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Md Musa Miah, son of Md. Harun Miah, resident of Charlatimara village in the upazila.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Trawler Association, said some trawlers including Babul’s one, were going to the Bay for netting at night. Suddenly, a gang of 25-30 armed robbers attacked their trawlers and beat them up indiscriminately at around 9pm.

The robbers also opened fire that left Musa dead on the spot and 11 seriously injured. Later, the pirates quickly drove the trawler and left the scene.

The injured were taken to Patharghata Hospital and Musa’s body was sent to Barguna morgue. Lieutenant Lutfur Rahman, the Coast Guard operations officer for the western zone, said, “We have heard such news and dispatched our force immediately on the spot.”
