Garbage truck hits elderly woman in Mohammadpur

Yet another garbage truck hit an elderly apparel worker in the city’s Mohammadpur on Thursday morning and both Dhaka North and South city corporations claimed that the truck did not belong to them.

Arju Begum, 60, sustained injuries in her waist and hands and she is now undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam said to The Business Post.

Shahidul Islam said after the accident truck driver Masud was arrested and he said the truck works for Dhaka South City Corporation. The truck bore a sticker of DSCC on its windshield.

Abu Naser, a spokesman of Dhaka South City Corporation, said the DSCC does not own the truck bearing the number Jashore Ta 1236. “If someone drives a vehicle with a DSCC sticker, it does not become DSCC’s truck,” he said.

Dhaka North City Corporation’s public relations officer in a statement claimed the DNCC does not own the truck.

Earlier on November 24, a 17-year-student of Notre Dame College Naim died after being hit by a garbage truck of DSCC in the city’s Gulistan area. His death sparked off widespread student protests demanding road safety.

A reporter of Daily Shangbad Ahsan Kabir, 46, was also killed after being hit by a DNCC garbage vehicle on the following day.

Several students on Thursday continued a sit-in on one side of Rampura Bridge on Thursday around 1:pm demanding road safety carrying placards with different slogans. They also scuffled with police when they tried to disperse the protesters. The protesters also announced a human chain on Friday morning at Rampura Bridge.
