Garbage-based power plant to be set up in Gazipur

A Tk 1,200 crore project to generate 42.5 megawatts of power from garbage will be launched in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) area.

A proposal will be placed in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase in this regard today.

Cabinet Division sources said 33.33 acres of land would be used for the management of solid garbage.

A Chinese company will launch the plant using the modern technology of incineration to make the city corporation area pollution-free. Under an agreement, the company will get a lease of GCC land for 20 years.

Waste management is currently one of the major crises of the GCC, which has been causing locals acute suffering. The GCC started its journey in 2013 and the waste management problem intensified with time.

Garbage is dumped randomly and accumulated beside the Dhaka-Tangail and Bhogra Bypass road carelessly, triggering environmental hazards. Unbearable odours from the accumulated garbage are another source of locals’ woes.

For the waste-based plant, 3,000 tonnes of garbage will be collected from the landfill in Aminbazar under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) daily.

The DNCC has already signed an agreement with the Chinese company in this regard. The company will operate the plant after ensuring health safety and environmental balance.

The Power Division will buy electricity from the plant to supply it to the national grid while Power Grid Company of Bangladesh will build the required transmission lines.
