RAB nabs 3 in Dhaka over human trafficking

The Rapid Action Battalion has detained three alleged members of an international human trafficking ring from the capital’s Mirpur and Uttara areas.

On a tip off, a RAB team detained Mollik Razaul Haque Selim, 62, Bulbul Ahmed Mollik, 55, and Nironjon Pal, 51 on Monday night.

During the drive, authorities seized several fake passports, visa stamps, photos and other documents from their possession, RAB-4 Commander Mozammel Haque said at a press conference at Karwan Bazar.

Providing more details, the official said, “This trafficking ring has been embezzling Tk 12 lakh to Tk 15 lakh per person by luring them with jobs in European countries such as Portugal, Netherlands, Romania, Greece, France and Malta.

“The ring used to send aspirant migrants on transit routes in India’s Delhi and Kolkata cities, then tortured in the different cells demanding Tk 15 lakh to Tk 20 lakh as ransom from each of the victim’s families.”

Jahangir Alam, a victim who recently fled from a torture cell in India, complained about the matter to RAB.

Jahangir told RAB that he was trying to go to the Netherlands through Bulbul and Selim in 2019. The victim claimed that the duo tortured him physical and mentally, and then the human trafficking ring threatened to kill him.

RAB’s Mozammel Haque said this ring had also trafficked three other people to Portugal and Malta, who recently returned after six months of imprisonment. “Legal action will be taken against the gang,” he added.
