DU to reduce 1,085 seats, scraps ‘Gha’ unit

The Dhaka University authorities have decided to reduce 1,085 seats from 2021-22 academic sessions and scrap the ‘Gha’ unit from its admission test process.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the General Admission Committee on Monday at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.

The meeting was chaired by the university Vice-Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman while Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Muhammad Samad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) ASM Maqsood Kamal, Treasurer Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed, deans of different faculties, chairmen of different departments and directors of different institutes were present.

Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman after the meeting said, “We are rearranging the seats for different departments and institutes as the number of students is more than its infrastructural and academic facilities in some departments.”

He said the number of seats will be reduced in some departments and institutes considering its capacity and on the basis of rational ground while seats will also be increased in some cases, reports BSS.

Infrastructures, resources and facilities will also be increased in the departments or institutes where seats are being increased, he added.

From now on, students will be enrolled to law faculty, arts faculty and social science faculty through ‘Kha’ unit admission test and DU admission test will be held under four units, said dean of arts faculty Dr Abdul Bashir.

However, a deans’ sub-committee has also been asked to formulate new procedures and regulations to let the interested students switch their units and departments, he added.

Former dean of Social Sciences faculty Dr Sadeka Halim told The Business Post, “I am not aware of today’s meeting. And I also do not support the decision as it deprives the students of their right to higher education.”
