Plotter of attacks on judges, law enforcers held

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime has arrested a mastermind on charges of planning to attack on judges and members of the law enforcement agencies.

The CTTC of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Monir Abdul Razzak and seized a mobile phone set, a passport, two local and foreign SIM cards and 19 pages of various fanatic screenshots from his possession.

Addressing a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Sunday, Chief of the CTTC Md Asaduzzaman said that a team of CTTC’s Cyber Crime Investigation Department conducted a special drive at Fakirapul area yesterday and arrested Monir Abdur Razzak.

Monir was a mastermind of attacking on judges and members of the law enforcement agencies by encouraging religious extremists, he said.

“The arrested Monir first went to Bahrain in 2007 as a labourer of a construction company and became radicalised by watching various posts and videos on religious extremism through digital social media,” the CTTC chief said.

Later he (Monir) opened a fake Facebook ID named ‘Gazwatul Hind’ and invited people to join a religious extremist group for jihad, he added.

Asaduzzaman said Monir last time came to Bangladesh from Bahrain in 2018 and after two months went to abroad again. Living abroad, he was involved in spreading news on militant activities including religious extremism and anti-state activities through social media.

He said that the arrested Monir also opened another fake Facebook ID named ‘Golam Rabbane’ identifying himself as a Pakistani citizen. Finally he came to Bangladesh on February 28 last and was planning to attack on the judges and members of the law enforcing agencies, Asaduzzaman added.

Among others, deputy commissioners AFM Al Kibria, Muhammad Habibun Nabi Anisur Rashid, Md Faruk Hossain, additional deputy commissioner Ishtiaq Ahmed, assistant commissioners Suranjana Saha and Abu Taleb were present.

A case under Digital Security Act has been filed against the arrested person with Ramna Model Police Station.
