Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla today emphasised on moving forward the existing Bangladesh-India relations to their highest level for the betterment of the people of the two friendly countries.
“Our relationship, which is now passing a golden chapter of history, is based on commonalities, mutual support and benefit and goodwill...It is growing faster than ever as people of the two countries have shed their blood for the independence of Bangladesh,” he said.
Shringla, the former high commissioner of India to Bangladesh, said the visit of Indian President, Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister to Bangladesh during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh’s War of Liberation reflects the India-Bangladesh ties, which have reached a newer height during the last few years.
He expressed these views while addressing an award giving ceremony for Logo and Backdrop Design Competition held on the occasion of Bangladesh-India Friendship Day (Maitri Dibas) at Bangladesh mission.
Shringla also highlighted various programmes undertaken by Bangladesh-India to celebrate the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and 50 years of Bangladesh-India diplomatic relations.
“We have celebrated the programmes jointly in 16 cities across the world”, he added.
He also mentioned various joint venture programmes undertaken by the two governments to facilitate movements of people as well as goods between the two countries and increase people to people contacts.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran, who spoke on the occasion, expressed gratitude to the then government of India and its people for providing allout support to the Bangladesh’s war of liberation in 1971.
“It may not be possible to achieve independence within the short span of time without the support of India”, he added.
Terming the 50 years of India-Bangladesh diplomatic relations as golden chapter of history, he said the ties between the two neighbours reached a newer height during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The high commissioner said public diplomacy between the two countries has been expedited while the two governments have been working closely on the basic bilateral issues for the betterment of the two people.
Later, they jointly handed over awards among the six winners participated in the logo and backdrop design competition marking the Bangladesh-India Friendship Day (Maitri Dibas).
