A Cumilla court on Tuesday sent Liberal Democratic Party Secretary General Redwan Ahmed and three activists to jail rejecting their bail petitions in a case filed over opening fire on a Chhatra League and a Swechchhasebak League activist on Monday in Chandina of Cumilla.
Judge of Cumilla Judicial Magistrate’s Court-7 Abu Bakar Siddique passed the order in the noon. The three others who were sent to jail are Ali Hossain, 37, Baki Billah, 39, and Rezaul karim, 55.
LDP leader Redwan Ahmed opened fire on Chhatra League activist Jhony Sarker and Secha Sebok League man Nazmul Hossain Naem on Monday following an altercation over a programme on Chandina Redwan Ahmed Degree College campus.
Jhony Sarker and Nazmul Hossain Naem sustained bullet wounds.
Police arrested Redwan Ahmed following the incident.
Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said firing by LDP Secretary General Redwan Ahmed in retaliation of throwing a watermelon in Cumilla needs to be investigated whether BNP's top leaders are behind it.
"Israeli soldiers generally open gunfire in response to pelting brickbats by Palestinian children, but, Redwan Ahmed opened gunfire against pelting a watermelon, not even a brickbat. And BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir tried to justify it (firing) and made various comments," he said.
"Now, the incident needs to be probed whether Redwan Ahmed opened gunfire at the directives of the BNP secretary general or other top leaders," the minister said.
Dr Hasan, also joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League, made the remarks while replying to a question from local journalists on Rangpur Circuit House premises in the afternoon.
