Court slaps travel ban on 5 NSU trustees

A Dhaka court on Tuesday imposed a travel ban on six people, including five members of Board of the Trustee of the North South University in a case filed on charges of embezzling and laundering Tk 303.82 crore.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order following a petition submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The six accused are – NSU Board of Trustees Chairman Azim Uddin Ahmed, members MA Kashem, Benajir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Mohammed Shajahan, and Ashaloy Housing and Developers Limited Managing Director Amin Md Hilali.

Earlier on Monday, the court sent four out of the six accused – MA Kashem, Benajir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Mohammed Shajahan to jail.

The court also allowed the ACC to interrogate the four accused at jail gate for a day in connection with the case.

The High Court on May 22 scrapped a plea filed by these four seeking anticipatory bail in the case and handed over them to Shahbagh police to arrest them immediately.

The ACC on May 5 filed the case with its integrated district office in Dhaka-1 against the six accused on charges of embezzling Tk 303.82 crore from the university’s funds for purchasing land for its permanent campus.
