Students and teachers of the Department of Oceanography at Dhaka University brought out a procession on the campus marking World Oceans Day on Wednesday.

This year World Oceans Day is being celebrated under the theme ‘Revitalisation of the sea through joint action’.

The university vice-chancellor Professor M Akhtaruzzman also attended the procession that began from Curzon Hall, said a press release. Inaugurating the procession, Akhtaruzzman emphasised the need for concerted efforts to protect marine resources, saying that the role of marine resources was crucial for our survival. Sustainable plans need to be adopted and implemented to protect these resources.

Mentioning that the river has a deep connection with the sea, Akhtaruzzman further said that the water resources of the river are being polluted due to various reasons including industries. This is having a negative effect on the sea. As a result, marine fauna and biodiversity are under threat. We all need to be vigilant in protecting marine resources, keeping the surrounding natural environment clean and preventing river pollution.
