Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to construct elevated roads, culverts and bridges in the haor region severely damaged in the recent floods.

“The prime minister has directed us to construct elevated roads, bridges and culverts, especially in Sunamganj and other haor districts, instead of reconstructing the roads,” Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters after the meeting of the executive committee of the National Economic Council held at the NEC conference room in the capital on Tuesday.

He said the prime minister had asked to undertake projects in the haor areas for constructing bridges and culverts.

The minister said the existing haor roads had been completely damaged in Sunamganj and other haor districts in the recent flash floods.

“I have requested the local government and rural development minister to undertake a rehabilitation project for the haor areas immediately,” he also said.

Mannan said special projects would be undertaken for rehabilitating the flood victims of Sylhet region.

“The prime minister also asked to construct overpasses at every level crossing across the country in phases for smooth transportation.”

“Special projects will be undertaken for rehabilitation of the flood victims of the Sylhet region,” said Mannan.

Sheikh Hasina also directed the authorities concerned to find out the places where the construction of underpasses and overpasses is needed.

The prime minister at another meeting of the ECNEC on January 25 had also ordered building elevated roads in haor areas, instead of following the traditional landfill method, so as to protect the country’s wetland ecosystem.

“She has iterated that bridges and culverts should be built in such a way that river traffic passes under such structures even during the rainy season,” Planning Minister MA Mannan said after that meeting.

In cyclone-prone areas, infrastructure needs to be built in such a way that water can flow from one bank to the other, the prime minister said.
