The University Grants Commission has directed the country’s private universities to stop bullying, illegal and cruel activities as well as nudity, vulgarism, indecent behavior and DJ party in the name of celebrating Rag Day.
The commission on Sunday issued a letter signed by its private university division Director Omar Faruque asking the private universities to take necessary steps in this regard.
The commission in the letter said it issued the instructions to all the private universities at the order of the High Court asking them to take necessary steps to stop such activities.
Officials at the commission said they will also issue another letter on Tuesday asking the public universities to stop similar activities in the name of celebrating the rag day at the public universities.
The commission came up with the move in complying with an order of the High Court.
The High Court on April 17 directed the concerned bodies of the government to take necessary steps within 30 days to stop bullying, illegal and cruel activities as well as nudity, vulgarism and DJ party in the name of Rag Day in all educational institutions across the country.
The Education Secretary, Information Secretary, and Chairman of the UGC were asked to comply with the order.
The HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order with a rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer M Kamrul Hasan on April 7 seeking necessary directives on the issue.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities of the government to explain in four weeks as to why their inaction to stop such activities at the educational institutions should not be declared illegal.
