The United Nations Human Rights Council has urged Myanmar to immediately start the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation and reintegration of all forcibly displaced Rohingya Muslims and other minorities now sheltered in Bangladesh.

The call was made through a resolution on the “Situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar” the UN rights body adopted without a vote at its 50th session.

With the initiative of Bangladesh, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) put forward the resolution, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva said in a press release on Thursday.

The western countries created pressure to remove the issue of repatriation from the resolution, mentioning that the repatriation process is not possible until the ongoing political crisis in Myanmar is resolved.

Bangladesh, however, maintained its unyielding stance for starting immediate repatriation of Rohingyas.

In the resolution, the UN Human Rights Council expressed grave concern at continuing reports of serious human rights violations and abuses in Myanmar, in particular against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities.

The UN rights body reiterated the importance of conducting international, independent, fair and transparent investigations into gross human rights violations and abuses in the Southeast Asian country.

It called for Myanmar to cooperate fully with and to grant full, unrestricted and unmonitored access to all United Nations mandate holders and human rights mechanisms.
