DU claims Samia owes Tk 11.41 lakh to them

Dhaka University authorities have claimed Tk 11.41 lakh due from Samia Rahman, a teacher at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, who took early retirement following her demotion on charges of plagiarism.

The High Court on August 4 declared illegal demoting her from the post of associate professor to assistant professor.

The university made the claim in a letter sent to Samia signed by the university’s registrar Prabir Kumar Sarker on August 3. “As per the syndicate’s decision, if you do not pay the university’s dues, then action will be taken as per the law,” the letter read.

Samia Rahman, who is now abroad, told The Business Post over the phone that she would move the court against the claim of the university authorities. She said that she does not owe the university rather the university owes her.

“They are harassing me since they lost the legal battle. They don’t want to pay me the money, I deserve. So, they are making untrue claims.” Samia said that she took early retirement from April 1, 2022, but the university authorities are claiming that her early retirement was approved from November 15, 2021.

“I have all the documents. They also granted me leave. I’ve no alternative but to move the court,” she said.

On March 31, 2022, Samia applied for early retirement from April 1, 2022, but the university syndicate on April 26 approved her early retirement from November 15, 2021. The High Court on August 4 declared illegal the decision of the university authorities to demote Samia Rahman from the post of associate professor to assistant professor on charges of plagiarism.

The court also ordered the government and university to pay all her due services and financial benefits from January 28, 2021.
