ACC to launch enquiry against Ramna OC’s illegal wealth

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to launch an enquiry against Ramna Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam on charges of amassing illegal wealth.

ACC Director Uttam Kumar Mandal has instructed to conduct the enquiry against OC Monirul Islam in a letter signed on 17 August, said ACC sources.

Meanwhile, the High Court on Sunday directed the ACC to wrap up the probe against Monirul within three months.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Suman, seeking necessary directives on the commission for an enquiry over the illegal wealth amassed by the OC.

During the hearing, ACC’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told the court that the anti-graft body has already taken a decision to conduct an enquiry into the allegations against Monirul.

On 10 August, Sayedul Haque Suman filed the writ petition as a public interest litigation citing a newspaper report published in a national Bangla daily on 5 August.

OC Monirul is facing charges of ‘abuse of power’, ‘corruption’ and ‘obtaining wealth beyond known sources of income’, according to the ACC.

There are allegations that Monirul has illegally amassed huge amount of wealth including buildings and plots. It has been also alleged that he grabbed a freedom fighter’s building at Mohammadpur Housing Society in the capital.

On 8 August, the report was brought to the attention of the HC by Barrister Sumon, seeking directions for action and investigation in this regard.

The HC then asked to bring the matter as an application (writ) and a writ was filed by the Barrister Sumon accordingly.
