People from all walks of life paid their last tributes to legendary Bangladeshi lyricist, film director, producer and screenwriter Gazi Mazharul Anwar after his mortal remains were taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Monday.

People in queues walked past his body lying in state and paid their respect to the celebrated lyricist.

The Dhaka district administration also gave state honours to Mazharul, a key performer of the wartime radio station Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.

Various socio-cultural organisations also paid their last tributes by placing wreaths on the coffin there.

Mazharul’s mortal remains were taken to the Shaheed Minar from the mortuary of United Hospital at 11:00am.

From there, the coffin was taken to the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) where his first namaz-e-janaza took place.

After paying respect to Mazharul at BFDC, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said many timeless songs including ‘Joy Bangla, Banglar Joy’ of legendary lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar had encouraged the freedom fighters and freedom lovers during the great Liberation War, reports BSS.

“The creation-works of late Mazharul Anwar will be preserved in the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation,” he said.

The minister said Anwar had composed more than 20,000 songs on different mediums including radio, television and cinema for 60 years. He also received ‘Ekushy Padak' in 2002, 'Swadhinata Padak' in 2021 and National Film Award six times, said Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary.

He said Anwar will ever be remembered through his work. The death of the iconic personality is an irreparable loss to the culture and the nation as well, he added.

The minister said three of his songs have been included in the list of the “Twenty greatest Bengali songs”, made by BBC Bangla.

His second funeral prayer was held at Channel i premises at Tejgaon.

The third janaza was held at Gulshan Azad mosque.

Mazharul was laid to rest at the Banani graveyard in his mother’s grave after Magrib prayers.

The legendary lyricist breathed his last at the United Hospital after some time after his arrival from his residence in the capital on Sunday (September 4) morning at the age of 79,
