AL leader gunned down in broad daylight

An Awami League leader named Saidur Pramanik, 50, was shot to death dead in broad daylight by unidentified assailants in Pabna Sadar upazila Friday noon.

The deceased was an executive member of Pabna Municipal Awami League, said Pabna Municipal Awami League President Advocate Taslim Hasan Sumon.

According to the deceased’s family, local residents and the police, Saidur was sitting with some people in a tea shop in Nojur Mor area just a few minutes before Friday prayers. Some unidentified assailants suddenly came, shot Saidur and fled the scene immediately.

The police initially suspect that he was killed due to a previous dispute over the last UP elections and land in Char Pratapur.

Local sources said the deceased is a distant cousin of the former chairman of Hemayetpur Union Alauddin Malitha. There was a dispute with him since the last Union Parishad election. Besides, there was a dispute with Alauddin over several lands in Char Pratappur area.

Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Masood Alam said everyone was busy praying in the mosque at the time of the incident. Saidur was outside the mosque when someone shot him and ran away.

“The police went to the spot after receiving the information. We are looking into the matter,” he added.
