Bangladeshi youth activists on Friday urged the government to scrap environmentally harmful projects and foster renewable energy expansion to ensure energy secured and sustainable Bangladesh.

They also urged the government and investors to eliminate dependency on import of fossil fuel and Liquefied natural gas (LNG).

They came up with the call during a rally held in solidarity with the Global Youth Climate Strike 2022, organised by YouthNet for Climate Justice in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka.

Highlighting the adverse impact of importing fossil fuels and LNG, the speakers termed it a ‘heavy financial burden’ for the country.

They also blamed dependency on imports of fossil fuel and LNG for recent crisis of electricity and oil in the country and suggested increasing share of renewable energy in the power sector.

Youths also demanded to shut climate pollution and reduce carbon emissions by preventing multinational corporations from investing in the fossil fuel-based power generations.

Dr Saleemul Huq, Director of International Centre for Climate Change and Development, Sohanur Rahman, Coordinator of Youthnet for Climate Justice and Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Vice President and Country Director of The Hunger Project spoke at the event, among others.
