The Space Allocation Committee at Dhaka University has put the chamber of a teacher of the journalism department at the Lecture Theatre under and key without informing him or allowing him to remove his belongings.
The teacher, Dr Md Abdur Razzaque Khan, an associate professor of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department on Saturday morning found his chamber sealed off with a bill pasted on the door that read, “Reserved for Arts Faculty as per July 21 decision of the Space Allocation Committee”
“They occupied my room like land grabbers. It’s inappropriate to encroach on a teacher’s room in such a manner. I condemn this act,” he said.
Journalism department chairperson Abul Mansur Ahmed said there was an understanding with the authorities concerned that four teachers of the department will have their chambers at the Lecture Theatre. “The university has some rules. It is never acceptable to occupy the chamber of a teacher,” he added.
The dean of Arts Faculty, Professor Abdul Bashir, told The Business Post that the Space Allocation Committee headed by the university Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Muhammad Samad had decided to allocate the rooms of journalism department teachers among the teachers of different departments under the arts faculty as the journalism department was shifted to a spacious floor of Social Science Building.
“They have separate places to accommodate teachers’ rooms. If there is any mistake from our end or if the Social Science Faculty fails to provide Abdur Razzaque Khan with any chamber, we will return him the room,” he added.
When the journalism department moved to Social Science Building from the Arts Building, there was a settlement between the department and the Arts Faculty that four of journalism will not shift from the Lecture Theater Building.
