A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against e-commerce platform Evaly’s Chairman Shamima Nasrin in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Judge Ash Shams Joglul Hossain of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal cancelled her bail and issued the warrant as she was absent during the charge sheet acceptance hearing on October 19, said the tribunal’s bench-assistant Sahmim Al Mamun.
On that day, the tribunal accepted the charges against Shamima and her husband Evaly Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rassel in the case filed over the embezzlement of Tk 21.62 lakh through forgery.
The tribunal also fixed January 22 for the charge framing hearing against the couple. The information about the issuance of the arrest warrant against Shamima was disclosed on Wednesday.
In September last year, Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, a customer from Dhaka’s Madhya Badda, filed the case at Badda Police Station against the couple and 15-20 unnamed Evaly officials.
Last month, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka.
According to case details, Rassel and Shamima enticed customers to sell products by publishing false information on social media platforms.
It said the plaintiff paid Tk 28.79 lakh to Evaly through bKash, Nagad, LankaBangla Finance credit card, City Bank Amex credit card and Brac Bank Visa card for its goods between January 1, 2020, and September 1, 2021.
Although Evaly promised to supply the products within 45 days, he did not receive the goods even after 45 days.
RAB arrested Rassel and Shamima from their flat in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on September 16 last year after another customer filed a case with Gulshan police over embezzlement.
Later, the couple was shown arrested in several cases filed against them at different police stations over embezzling customers’ money.
Shamima has been out on bail for a while now and Rassel is still in jail.
