The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested five more people allegedly involved with new militant group Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya.
They arrested Md Abdullah, 22, Md Tambul Islam, 33, Md Ziauddin, 37, Md Habibullah, 19, and Md Mahamudul Hasan, 18, in Dhaka’s Demra on Wednesday.
CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter on Thursday at a press briefing and said that the leader of this group Shamim Mahfuz was yet to be arrested. Of the arrestees, Habibullah and Mahmudul -- being influenced by the outfit’s leaders -- left their homes recently while the three others were tasked to ensure shelters and training to the new recruits, he said.
CTTC earlier arrested Abrarul Haque in Dhaka’s Mogbazar area on September 13 when he left home from Cumilla. Later, they also arrest doctor Shakir Bin Wali in Rampura’s Hajipara area, said Asaduzzaman.
He said that doctor Shakir is a chief of dawat (recruiting) department of the militant group and stayed in camp in Bandarban for one month. He trained the members how to manage first aid in case of an attack. The CTTC came to know that this group has recruited 70 to 80 members since 2021.
Earlier, RAB arrested 10 people on October 20, of whom 7 are Jamatul Ansar members and 3 are from extremist organisation Kuki Chin National Front (KNF), in Bandarban and Rangamati.
RAB claimed that KNF is training members of the new militant group Jamatul Ansar in the CHT against a monthly payment deal.
As per the deal, which was reached following a meeting between KNF founder Nathan Bawm and the militant group in 2021, Jamatul Ansar pays KNF Tk 3 lakh per month and also bears the food expenses of all KNF personnel training its members. The training is supposed to continue until 2023.
