Find alternatives to extradite killer Nur, Dhaka tells Ottawa

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday requested the Canadian government to find an alternative way to send back Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s convicted killer Nur Chowdhury from there.

He made the request as Canadian High Commissioner Lilly Nicholls called on him at his office.

“We have discussed about ways to send back Nur Chowdhury from Canada. The High Commissioner informed us that Canadian law does not permit to send such persons to those countries where execution of death sentence takes place. I requested her to look into the possibilities of finding an alternative way to send him back. Sheltering a convicted killer is violation of human rights,” Anisul said while talking to newsmen after the meeting.

The law minister said the Canadian envoy told him that she will convey the matter to her government.

While talking about Data Protection Act, the law minister said a meeting was held with stakeholders about formulating the draft of this law, adding, “Two-three more meetings will be held. This act will be formulated for protecting data, not for regulating.”
