Another nine dengue patients have died in 24 hours till Thursday morning posting the highest number of deaths in a single day this year.
With the latest counts, the official death toll from the disease this year rose to 161, according to the said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
In the last 24 hours, 882 new patients were admitted to hospitals and among them, 498 were in the capital and 384 in other parts of the country. In the first three days of the incumbent month, 2,959 patients were hospitalised and 20 more died.
Moreover, Bangladesh witnessed the highest number of infections and deaths in October for the first time in the previous 20 years. Although earlier health authorities had predicted a reduction in dengue infection in November but the number of patients in hospitals has been on the rise persistently.
A total of 3,676 patients were being treated in different hospitals across the country till Thursday, DGHS said, adding that, among them, 2,276 were hospitalised in the capital and another 1,400 in other parts of the country.
So far, a total of 40,983 dengue cases were recorded and 161 people have died from the disease this year. Besides, dengue cases were detected in every district except Niphamari and Kurigram.
Health experts opined that the number of deaths would overtake the record of 2019, if it continues to rise in the same way. In 2019, the highest 1,01,354 dengue cases and 179 deaths were reported mostly in the capital crossing all previous records.
