CTTC looks for link between Jamaat, Sharqiya

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime of police is now investigating whether there is connection between Jamaat-e-Islami and new militant group ‘Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya’.

The CTTC’s Chief Md Asaduzzaman in a press briefing on Thursday said this after arresting Sylhet region chief coordinator of the militant group Dr Rafat and his one associate Arif from Sylhet on Wednesday.

“We have come to know that Rafat is the son of Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman. We will be trying to know whether he had any instructions from his father’s organisation (Jamaat) to join this new militant organisation.”

Asaduzzaman said that the CTTC unit earlier arrested three people for their alleged involvement with extremism from Dhaka’s Saydabad area on November 1. During the interrogation, the arrestees said that they all received invitation and motivated through Rafat.

Rafat was interning after passing MBBS from a medical college. The arrested Tanim, Anbir and Zahid told the CTTC that Rafat was the mentor of those who migrated from Sylhet, he said.

“In primary interrogation, we came to know that 11 people migrated to Bandarban from Sylhet in June 2021 under the leadership of Rafat and another associate Tahiyat. After seven days, they returned to Sylhet and continued the activities as they could not contact the other leaders of the militant group during their migration to Bandarban, he added.

The CTTC chief said that Rafat and his other associates have been taking youths to remote hill area and giving them militant training in the name of Hijrat.

Some of the members of group were trained to make bombs and test the effectiveness of the bombs, he said.

Asked about their target and purpose, Asaduzzman said that Shamim Mahfuz is the mastermind of the Jamatul Ansar. His partner is Tamal. If they are arrested, their future plans will be known, he added.

Asaduzzaman said that they have identified several other youths from Sylhet region who are ready to migrate.
