Coroners suspect AL leader Biplob murdered

Coroners at Narayanganj General Hospital said Awami League’s agriculture and cooperative affairs sub-committee member Duranta Biplob might have been murdered as his corpse bore marks of injuries.

Dr Mofiz Uddin Pradhan Nipun, a physician at Narayanganj General Hospital where the autopsy was done on Sunday, told journalists that there were marks of injuries on the back of Biplob’s head and on the chest.

The physician said they suspect that Biplob died after being hit on the back of the head with a heavy object.

“It can be confirmed after receiving the final report of the post-mortem. But initially, it can be said that Biplob was murdered,” he added.

An agricultural entrepreneur, Biplob had a farm named Sonamati Agro in Keraniganj. He was on his way to his mother’s home at Mohammadpur when he went missing on November 7, said his sister Shashwati Biplob adding that they recorded a general diary with the South Keraniganj police station.

Biplob’s body was fished out from the Buriganga river in the Jajira area of South Keraniganj on Saturday afternoon, said Shahab Uddin Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police of Keraniganj circle.

Biplab’s family members came to Narayanganj early Sunday and identified the body from a photo.

A popular alumnus of the drama and dramatics department at Jahangirnagar University, Biplob was a former general secretary of the university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader in a statement condoled the death of Duranta Biplob. He left behind his wife, a daughter and a host of relatives.
