Dhaka has requested New Delhi to handover the historic building at 8 Theatre Road in Kolkata, which housed the secretariat of Bangladesh’s government in exile during 1971 war of independence, to Bangladesh.

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Thursday made the request when newly appointed Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma met him at the ministry, said a press release.

Welcoming the new envoy in Bangladesh, the minister recalled the support of the Indian government and people during the great liberation war.

The also discussed various bilateral issues during the meeting. Issues of scholarships for the children of the freedom fighters, treatment facility for freedom fighters, construction of Freedom Road in Mujibnagar also came in the discussion.

Minister Mozammel also informed the high commissioner of the construction of a memorial at Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria in memory of the Indian soldiers who embraced supreme sacrifice during the war of liberation.

Pranay Verma said that Bangladesh-India relations have been tested. The memorial in memory of the members of the Allied Forces will further strengthen Bangladesh-India friendship, he added.
