Work on to tackle climate issues in Barind, Haor regions

To tackle the climate change impacts in the country’s two climate-vulnerable zones – Barind Tract and Haor region – the government was now implementing an ecosystem-based adaptation system, said Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin.

As part of the move, several eco-friendly measures including the re-excavation of canals, bevels, ponds, and afforestation programmes are being taking place in the Hakaluki Haor area under the Sylhet division, he said.

Meanwhile, digging of ponds and canals and afforestation measures are being carried out targeting harvesting through rainwater in the Barind area under Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. The minister told these while addressing the inauguration ceremony of re-excavation of Madhabchhara canal, 3 bills, and 18 ponds under the ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation in the drought-prone Barind Tract and the Haor Wetland Area in Baralekha Upazila of the Moulvibazar district.

Training are being provided to enhance the capacity of government officials and local people on ecosystem-based adaptation approaches, Shahab Uddin said adding that effects of the climate change would be tackled by involving people from all walks of life.

Baralekha Upazila Parishad Chairman Shoeb Ahmad, Baralekha Municipality Mayor Abul Imam Md Kamran Chowdhury, Moulvibazar District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Akhtaruzzaman, among others, attended the event.
