Fines if any lapse found in fire safety management: Atiqul

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Saturday said the building owners will be fined during inspections if they fail in fire safety management even after receiving alert messages.

“Initially, we will inspect twenty buildings to scrutinise the safety management and give an alert message on fire safety if necessary. Later, the number of inspections will be increased to make Dhaka a safer city,” Atiqul said while addressing a round table.

The event titled “Fire Safety Challenges in Bangladesh” was held at the Eighth International Fire, Safety and Security Expo (IFSSE) 2022 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).

Organised by the Electronics Safety and Security Association of Bangladesh (ESSAB) and co-partnered by the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (BFSCD), the three-day expo, which started on November 24, aims to showcase the latest firefighting technology and create awareness among the public.

Atiqul said the city corporation will not provide any funds to build or repair the roads in front of the structures if the roads are less than 20 feet in width. He also said they have to create awareness among the people regarding fire safety.

“We have to train all councillors and factory workers on the fire safety issue. We must take action to deal with the issue as safety is most important for lives,” he added.

He also urged the developers to follow the national building code and fire safety regulations during constructions.

ESSAB President Zahir Uddin Babar, Secretary General M Mahmudur Rashid, Joint Secretary General Zakir Uddin Ahmed and Director Md Monzur Alam also spoke at the programme among others.

BFSCD Director General Brig Gen Md Main Uddin said, “We always try to go to the spot quickly when the fire service receives calls through 999 regarding any incident, but we face challenges due to narrow roads and lack of modern equipment.

“We have to work more under public-private partnership (PPP) to cover more ground across the country, and at the community level. To make Bangladesh a safer country, we need cooperation from all stakeholders.”

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited Managing Director Md Haronur Rashid Mullah, Project Director of urban resilience project at RAJUK Abdul Latif Helaly and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) Assistant Director (Physical) Md Mizanur Rahman also spoke there.
