Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said it won’t be easy for BNP and others to overthrow the Awami League government through movement.

They can, at best, hatch conspiracies against the government, she added.

“BNP started a movement to overthrow the government just a few days ago. Is it so easy? Rather, AL the capability (to pull off a movement like that),” she firmly said.

The prime minister was addressing a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Awami League at Krishibid Institution in Dhaka’s Farmgate area, on the occasion of Victory Day.

AL President Sheikh Hasina, who chaired the discussion, said her party had ousted Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan - beating him in the Liberation War, HM Ershad, and Khaleda Zia after February 15, 1996 “voter-less election”, as well as thwarted BNP’s plan to hold an election (January 22, 2007) with “fake voters”.

“When AL is in power, yes, they can just hatch conspiracies,” she said.

The prime minister asked everyone to uphold the victorious flag and remain vigilant so that killers and war criminals are not able to destroy the country through coming to power.

She also questioned why BNP is desperate to topple the government in this month of victory.

Sheikh Hasina said people of the country endured immense suffering during the BNP-Jamaat regime after her party couldn’t come to power in 2001 “due to conspiracies.”

The prime minister said every citizen would have computer literacy and e-governance, e-business and e-commerce would be developed further alongside modernization of healthcare services and education to build the country as ‘Smart Bangladesh’.

Focusing on the current political situation, Sheikh Hasina wondered how leftists joined hands with BNP and Jamaat, going against their ideology and principle.

“Where are leftists and where are rightists? That means our leftists, far leftist, slight leftists and extreme leftists- joined a single platform with Jamaat and BNP. What a strange country this is! Seleucus! Where is their ideology and principle?” she said.

Sheikh Hasina wondered how the big theorists who speak high words can join together under the leadership of convicted persons.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader delivered the opening speech in the discussion, while its advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu, AL presidium members Matia Chowdhury, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Shajahan Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Simeen Hussain Rimi, and joint general secretary Dr Hassan Mahmud, among other AL leaders, on the occasion.

Bangladesh must not return to lawlessness again

At another programme on the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked all to keep vigil so that the country does not get trapped into ‘lawless situation’ again.

“Bangladesh must not plunge into that (lawlessness) condition again,” she said while addressing a programme marking the Golden Jubilee anniversary of Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Bangladesh Supreme Court organised the programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).

Sheikh Hasina recalled that after the assassination of her father, mother, brothers and sister-in-law she was not allowed to seek justice.

“My scope to seek justice was barred through indemnity ordinance,” she said.

She said that she does not want that anyone will ever suffer the lawless situation like them.

In this connection, she regretted that the persons who was behind all the evil deeds including the assassination of the Father of the Nation and promulgation of indemnity ordinance had been treated as the bearers of democracy.

“This is really very much disgraceful for independence and an Independent country,” she said.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique presided over the programme.

Law Minister Anisul Huq, Indian Supreme Court Justice Mukeshkumar Rasikbhai Shah, former chief justice and Chairman of Law Commission ABM Khairul Haque and Appellate Division Justice Obaidul Hassan also spoke at the programme.

The prime minister also distributed first ever Chief Justice Award among the winners in six categories.
