Nat’l Undergraduate Math Olympiad held at DU

The final phase of the 13th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad was held at Dhaka University on Friday.
The Bangladesh Mathematical Society with the help of the AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation organised the event at the mathematics department of the university.

Dhaka University pro-vice-chancellor (education) ASM Maksud Kamal inaugurated the event, while science faculty dean Md Abdus Samad and Professor Md Shahidul Islam, president of Bangladesh Mathematical Society president were also present, said a
press release.

A total of 82 contestants from the top ten in the regional level participated in the final round of the Olympiad. Of them, 10 were awarded.

Mathematics department chairman Professor Md Shahidul Islam presided over the prize-giving ceremony, while DU pro-vice-chancellor (administration) professor Muhammad Samad was present as chief guest.

Besides, AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation trustee M Nurul Alam, Olympiad committee convener Professor Md Monirul Alam Sarkar and final round convener Professor Shapla Shirin were present at the concluding ceremony.

The 10 winners are Imtiaz Tanweer Rahim, Nian Ibne Nazrul, Apurbo Roy Chowdhury, Atunu Roy Chowdhury, Minhazul Islam Nawshad, Sheikh Mahabubuzzaman, Md Morshed Alam Sagor, Md Rakin Asif Almas, Meem Zaman, Raiyan Jannat.

The AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation awarded each of the top ten winners a certificate, crest and Tk 10,000, and the Bangladesh Mathematical Society awarded Tk 5,000 each of the top five winners.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Muhammad Samad said, “Mathematics has space in all sphere of life. Mathematics develops thinking power. Even poetry has applications of mathematics. Development of a country or a nation is not possible without improvement of mathematics, science and technology.”

He congratulated the winning students and called on them to read books especially books by scientists, philosophers and thinkers along with mathematics.
