The Anti Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police arrested a member of the banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir in the Natun Bazar area of the capital’s Vatara on Friday.
The arrestee, Tomij Ahmed Sobuj, 32, is a fugitive convict and had been hiding in different parts of the country for about seven years, said ATU Superintendent of Police (media and awareness) Muhammad Aslam Khan.
He said Sobuj had been involved in plotting anti-democratic conspiracies as well as running propaganda campaigns against democracy and the country’s conventional justice system by creating fear and unrest with the aim of establishing the Islamic caliphate.
The officer also said Sobuj had been arrested in 2014 while distributing Hizb ut-Tahrir leaflets and then went into hiding after being released on bail.
“For a long time, he had been carrying out various online activities aimed at establishing a caliphate in Bangladesh, such as hatching anti-state conspiracies and spreading radical propaganda. The ATU was finally able to arrest him,” he added.
